I do understand the dilemma where you're living. My daughter recently moved back after securing a 100% remote job. Prior to that she lived in Orlando, just down the street from Disney Springs (so a really high rent neighborhood!) The money she paid for a studio apartment was ridiculous, but was close to her work and she chose the higher rent over commuting. It amazes me how much new construction is going in! How do they expect to fill all those apartments and condos on service industry wages is beyond my comprehension. Businesses should pay workers a living wage, period.

I wish you all the best with your new side hustle.

This is so cool Matthew! Thank you so much for checking out Manlius. New York. It is a great village and beautiful country roads. :) I'm happy to see the swan pond. Beautiful painting and colors.

Thank you Julie! I thought, "I hope she's okay with me outing her location". Since it's on your book, I thought it would be okay. I'm glad you liked the painting.

Being originally from New York State, (Olean in Western NY), I miss the country roads. Riding the bus to the adjoining town and through my neighborhood, I didn't know there were these big roads and interstates. My grandma lived in the country, just across into Pennsylvania. Everything was in the boondocks. Moving to Florida in 1982, I got an eye-opener into the roads down here. There used to be some boondocks here, but development has overtaken it.

HI Matthew, I know where Olean, NY is! How cool and what a small world. I'm so glad you shared this with me. yes, one thing I love about Central NY the scenery, country roads, and wonderful parks. Have a wonderful weekend.

You are one of only a few people that have ever told me they know where Olean is.

About 14 years ago, I had jury duty. When I was in the jury room, one of my fellow jurors started talking about Chautauqua, NY. I told her I was originally from Olean and she said she knew where that was. Of course, she lived in the next county over and only 65 miles west. I couldn't believe that someone from that area was right there with me on the jury.

Wow, that's some great work there. What got you interested in painting abstract? I've never done abstract.

Thanks Pennie! I tried painting landscapes but I couldn't get the hang of it. I tried all kinds of techniques from popular tv show hosts like Jerry Yarnell. He had a bunch of his shows on my local PBS station and I used to follow everything he did. I thought it looked easy. But once i got the brushes, paints and canvases, it turned out harder than I thought.

I had been looking at other art and wondered if I was just working in the wrong genre. I viewed a ton of videos of abstract art on Youtube and fell in love with that form of art. I tried to paint the way people were creating their art but it wasn't working out the way I wanted it to. I'm very critical.

Then I decided to create my own way of doing it. And I have been successful in doing it. And I'm having a lot of fun.

Well, it looks as if you found your style. Keep them coming, your work is good. As for landscapes, I enjoy painting landscapes but mine are as a writer would say fiction. The landscapes I paint are from my own head. I believe they would be harder to do if I tried to paint a real landscape.

I love the vibrancy of your colors. Even if you didn’t explain or entitle each one, they would enliven a room of any dull wall.

Thank you Ms. Writer. Not really a hobby. It is going to be my second job. I hope to bring in some extra money to compliment my day job. That's what it is going to take to get out of my current living situation. Rents are going up and mine went up $270 last year. To give you an idea around here, most of the apartments start at $2,200 for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath. That is outrageous and I don't know where it is going to stop. I don't pay anywhere near that right now. I take care of my Mom, so I would need that type of apartment.

But I'm constantly worrying about whether my rent is going to go up and whether we can afford it.

And I have to think about the future. It's true that people stay a long time, well past 75, and still work in the business I am in. But the salaries don't go up much.

Acrylic on canvas! Amazing. And you put the colour down then outline in black? Very cool. Thanks Matthew. Interesting art.

Thank you Beth. I use photos for a mock-up of what I want to do. Then I add in some additional things. Add color within the mock-up and finish it off with the black outline.
