Gosh, Matt! So impressed by all of these stories - and wow, your mum!!! I wonder how many venomous snakes you have over there?
There are only three snakes native to the UK, one of which is venomous. Grass snakes are around and about - I used to see one in the garden sometimes, but I haven't for years. Smooth snakes are extremely rare. Adders aren't all that common either - they're our only venomous species, and every summer you read perhaps one or two stories about small dogs being bitten and killed.
Thanks Rebecca! I don't know how many venomous snakes we have here. I don't think I want to know. It's interesting to hear about the kinds of snakes in your area. I'm sure every country has different species. I didn't post a photo of one, because it's hard for me to look at them. One came on the tv last night, a very long and large one, and I quickly changed the channel. So I'll have to trust your description of yours, as I can't look them up.
Matt, I was dying laughing! I can only imagine those roofers whooping it up at your mom's bravery! And the animal control guy--"If I go down..." I feel like he should deputized you for being his backup!

I've seen black snakes down here only a handful of times and, even though I know they're non-poisonous, I still don't like them. I sympathize! :)
