When my sister and her husband owned a home in a subdivision, their next door neighbor and friend liked to annoy and aggravate the HOA board. He put up a fence without their permission and put four sheds in his back yard. He didn't care what they said or did because the rules were stupid. As for condo rules, when I lived with my ex-boyfriend, they had stupid rules too. Like what was allowed on the screened porch and the color of the blinds put on the windows. For as much as associations charge an owner you should be able to live there without such restrictions.
Great comment! When I lived in the house, the HOA fee was low for the area. It went up a few times but it was around $38 / month. We only had a community pool, playground, and a tennis court. I think it eventually went up to $43. That was real cheap compared to other places. Their fees were usually in the $200/month range.
With renting my condo now, luckily I don't have to pay the HOA fee but I'm sure that price is put into my rent payment. The condo HOA fee is $492/month. We have a community pool and clubhouse. That's it. The associaton takes care of outside building maintenance and they replace the kitchen light bulbs.
I live in a little group of six villas managed by a Neighbourhood Association comprising the six owners and a management company representative. We all talk to each other about stuff anyway so there are never any major issues. Like any Committee though there’ll be conflicting opinions. We’ll be having a discussion about insurances early next year.
We tend to have more trouble with Council approvals - they are the ones who had to approve the removal of a row of large trees in the common area. We just had to get a report from an arborist to say that they were dangerous and all was ok.
The joys of being human and living in communities. There are definitely benefits but yes, we all have Opinions. Grin. Thanks for the story Matthew. All the best.

Another great story, Matt - gosh, it's a minefield out there!
