Hey Everyone!
Every once in a while, I write some fifty-word fiction over on
“Fifties by the Fire”. I highly recommend his Substack. The challenge is to come up with fifty-words based on a prompt and photo. The goal is to write either fiction, creative non-fiction, or poetry based on the topic. And have fun doing it!
Last Friday’s topic was “Arrivals and Departures”.
I wrote fiction based on both topics.
Here they are. I hope you enjoy them as much as the readers on his Substack have. I think I’ve received more likes from this writing than I’ve ever received before.
Home, Fiction [Arrivals]
It was so quiet. All you could hear were the military personnel moving in precision. Greg would have enjoyed seeing all the people who came out. It’s not every day that you see something so special as this. The dignified transfer was complete. A hero to us and finally home.
Goodbye for Now, Fiction [Departures]
Summer was over. A sadness drew over the whole family. Emily was going off to college to experience adulthood. How could we let her go? The release we felt was overwhelming. We were proud parents. Would she remember us? Of course, she’d be home for Christmas. See you soon honey!
Conclusion
I’d like to get your feedback. Did you like these two examples of fifty-word fiction? Would you like to see more on my Substack?
P.S.
I have participated in other 50-word challenges on “Fifties by the Fire”. I’ll have to dig those up and post them.
Until next time, happy reading!

Lovely. Short and effective. A great tool for creativity and the practice of writing. Well done.
Thanks for the mention! I enjoyed your stories just as much the second time around.
